Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the program, participants will report their intention to:

  2. Understand how to assess for factors that may impact patient safety outside the clinic, such as intimate partner violence, recreational drug use, housing and food insecurity, among others; and learn how to support and provide resources for headache patients who are experiencing physical and sexual abuse, trauma and violence
  3. Learn about potential drug-drug interactions that are unique to these populations, including how headache medications may interact with GAHT, PrEP and DoxyPEP, and certain recreational and/or psychoactive substances
  4. Review how childhood trauma, puberty, and the socio-cultural-political environment impact care for LGBTQIA+ pediatric populations in headache

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE

This educational activity is designed to enhance the clinical competence and confidence of healthcare providers in delivering inclusive, evidence-based care for LGBTQIA+ patients with headache disorders. Participants will explore how felt and enacted stigma contribute to disparities in diagnosis, management, and outcomes, and will gain practical strategies to mitigate these risks and improve patient safety. The activity will also address social determinants of health—such as intimate partner violence, substance use, and housing or food insecurity—and equip learners with tools to support patients experiencing trauma and abuse. Attendees will deepen their understanding of clinically relevant drug-drug interactions involving gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), HIV prevention medications (PrEP and DoxyPEP), and recreational substances. Finally, learners will review the unique challenges in caring for LGBTQIA+ youth, including the effects of childhood trauma, puberty, and sociocultural stressors, with a focus on providing affirming and developmentally appropriate care in headache medicine.
